Samsung laptops run for a month

BOFFINS at Samsung Electronics have developed a docking station equipped with a fuel cell capable of powering a laptop for a month. According to Engadget, the new docking station, which works with Samsung’s Q35 ultraportable laptop contains a 1200-watt-hour fuel cell.

The dock can power a laptop eight hours a day, five days a week for a month. Apparently the boffins are working on a miniature version which can power a laptop for more than 15 hours “on a coffee cup’s worth of fuel”. Although it is not clear how much fuel there is in a cup of coffee.

The dock is powered by a Direct Methanol Fuel Cell with a maximum output of 20 watts. This technology is jolly good at producing small amounts of power over a long periods at low temperatures, making them well suited to mobile devices.

Samsung says that the cell’s 650Wh/L energy density is four times that of its competitors. Apparently the dock will hit the shops at the end of next year

This is very sweet. The future of mobile devices is upon us.. and we are getting closer and closer to the shipstone, inc.! (Yay Heinlein reference, now I’ll laugh in my own nerdy little world!)
