WWDC 2007 Keynote Coverage

After watching Macrumors live stream here are some of the things I find exciting about the future of the new OSX and Apple’s new hardware coming out.

* Apple has made deals with EA and ID software to port more games over to the Mac.

* A brand new GUI for OS 10.5

* Better networking

* The first completely 64-bit Operating System

* Spaces: Multiple desktops built right into Mac OS 10.5

* Using safari to make custom widgets from web pages

* Sharing iphoto slideshows, keynote presentations, and video though ichat

*Auto backup with Time Machine

* Safari on Windows!

* Open development widgets for the iPhone.

Nothing really new was revealed, except for moving Safari to Windows; which is exciting since I need a browser that won’t leak everywhere. Memory on Safari seems under control; but it does suck up processing cycles…

No new hardware is a disappointment… I was hoping  for new iMacs and a new MacMini… but with he release of the new Macbook pro less then a week ago…. it kinda makes up for it.

Apple attempting to get gain support from the gaming community again is interesting; I don’t know how far it will go but it’s a start to make the Mac a more complete platform for gaming. EA and ID are two big names and a good start on moving gaming to the Mac.

Overall, it was a disappointment. The gaming things are exciting but after that we saw features of 10.5 that we either already knew about or that were under whelming. No real news about the iPhone that is interesting, having a way for third party developers to tinker with it is a good start. But we will see in the coming months are Leopard and the iPhone are released where Apple is going to stand in 2008.

The best part was when Jobs announced the pricing on Leopard.  He lists the basic, business, premium, and ultimate versions to all be priced at… $129. A bit of a swing at Microsoft, a great “LOL” moment.

Go to Macrumors for more information, and here for a detailed run down of Leopard’s features.
