Sony Confirms PS3 Price Cut

Confirming Internet reports from late last week, Sony Computer Entertainment America has officially confirmed the company will be dropping the price of the 60GB PlayStation 3 SKU to $499, effective Tuesday. Additionally, Sony will be introducing an 80GB SKU in August for $599 bundled with a copy of MotorStorm.

So far, the price drop is only for North America. Stay tuned for more details as E3 begins next week.

This is a bit of a surprise, but I guess Sony might be getting desperate. But will the middle of the summer be the right time? Gamers with part-time jobs have money and might be willing to shell out $500, but not in the numbers that could be seen this holiday season. Maybe another drop before Christmas?

Who knows how this will effect the market, price doesn’t effect me as much as a strong game library. Which so far, the Playstation 3 doesn’t have and won’t have for a while.

  1. I think that they are trying to raise the number of game sold during the holiday season, the idea being that if the can get a bunch of people to buy the system (which they are losing money on) now, they will be able to sell more games (which they make money on) during the holidays
