Deluxe 200,000 Yen ($1,600) “Mobile Suit Gundam” T-Shirt Created

Toy giant Bandai is offering a deluxe “Mobile Suit Gundam” t-shirt with a hefty price tag. Produced with the help of deluxe apparel designers mastermind JAPAN with a design rendered in crystals, each shirt will retail at a price of 200,000 yen (approximately $1,600 US dollars).

According to a Nihon Keizai Shimbun report dated August 2nd, the shirt incorporates Swarovsky crystals handstitched into the fabric to form the shapes of Gundam Mobile Suits and Zakus, etc., from the original “Mobile Suit Gundam” anime. The t-shirt will be available through selected department stores within Japan.

There are also plans to offer a more affordable version of the shirt that utilizes glass beads instead of crystals, retailing at an estimated price of 38,000 yen ($320). This shirt will be sold in the US, France, Italy, Singapore, and China as well as within Japan.

$1600 for a t-shirt with a Gundam on it?! Are they insane! Are the fans in Japan that much crazier than they are in America!?

I know that I’m a crazy fan and I’d spend an obscene about of money on merchandise… but $1600 for a t-shirt seems to  only target either the very rich or people who love Gundam so much they haven’t left their house since 1981…. which wouldn’t give them much time to show off a t-shirt.
