T-mobile encourages unlocked iPhones

I was doing my Christmas shopping and walked by a T-Mobile booth. I figured I’d try to do the most rude thing I could think of, after all this was the holidays and retail workers deserve to be mistreated as much as possible. So I approached the booth and asked one of the salesmen; “Do you have that iPhone I’ve been hearing about?”
I didn’t know what to expect, but I got something surprising.
“No,” he answered. “But if you go online and buy an unlocked phone, we can hook you up with service.”
I thanked him for the tip and walked away.
I thought it was funny at first, and then I started to really think about the legality of the matter. It’s not illegal to unlock an iPhone but a company advocating breaking the terms of service on a competing product seems to lack ethics. This also shines some light on the demand for black market iPhones. The salesman didn’t bat an eye when he suggested that I go online to find an unlocked phone; so it is possible that he dealt with multiple unlocked iPhones.
An interesting look at the not so black market of unlocked iPhones.
It might not be the company advocating it, just a guy that gets paid on commission trying to make more money.
